Our Story
Valhalla Lore is an independent educational magazine dedicated to Norse mythology and early northern history, published at valhalla.edu.pl. We were founded by a small group of historians, philologists and archaeologists who wanted to create a reliable, beautiful and welcoming place for anyone curious about the Viking Age and the medieval North. Our name reflects our purpose: to keep lore alive not as fantasy decoration but as lived history, literature and belief.
Too often, the stories of Odin, Thor and Freyja are reduced to clichés or distorted by modern entertainment. We believe readers deserve better. Every article, timeline and translation we publish is built on primary sources such as the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, skaldic poetry and the Icelandic sagas, balanced with current archaeological research and critical debate about how these sources were created and transmitted.
What We Cover
Our scope spans the pre-Christian religions of Scandinavia, the culture and society of the Viking Age from the late eighth to the late eleventh century, and the later medieval reception of these traditions. We explore the cosmology of the Nine Worlds and Yggdrasil, the complex families of gods and goddesses, the legendary heroes and their sagas, and the rituals, divination and burial customs that shaped daily life.
Beyond myth, we cover history you can touch: ship burials at Oseberg and Gokstad, rune stones across Sweden and Denmark, trading towns like Hedeby and Birka, and the expansion, settlement and encounters that took Norsemen to England, Normandy, Iceland, Greenland and Vinland. We also examine symbols and artifacts, from Mjolnir pendants to intricate animal art, and explain what they actually meant to the people who made and wore them.
How We Work
Accuracy and accessibility are our two guiding standards. All long-form content is written or reviewed by contributors with academic training in Old Norse studies, history or archaeology, and every claim is linked to its source so you can follow the evidence yourself. Where scholarship disagrees, we say so and explain why. Where evidence is thin, we are honest about uncertainty rather than inventing details.
We write in clear, engaging English for general readers and students, avoiding both dry jargon and sensationalism. Illustrations and maps are created to support understanding, not to mislead. We commission new translations where possible and compare existing ones to show how word choice shapes meaning, especially for Old Norse poetry.
Our Community
Valhalla Lore is more than an archive. Our forums invite thoughtful discussion, questions and collaborative learning. Whether you are preparing a school project, designing a course, researching reenactment, or simply discovering the sagas for the first time, you will find a respectful space moderated for curiosity and kindness. We do not tolerate misinformation, hateful appropriation or the misuse of northern symbols for extremist purposes. Cultural respect is essential to honest education.
